Lab School Teams Meet at UMW
Stafford County, VA- Educators and leaders from across Virginia convened at the Academy of Technology and Innovation at the University of Mary Washington in Stafford County for a day of collaboration and shared learning focused on the implementation of College Partnership Lab Schools. Approximately 35 attendees representing both higher education and K-12 school divisions participated in discussions on lessons learned from the first year of implementation and strategies for sustaining innovation in Virginia’s public schools.
The day began with classroom tours of the Academy’s innovative learning spaces, where attendees observed students engaging in hands-on, technology-integrated instruction designed to align with real-world career pathways. These learning environments demonstrated how modern educational spaces can foster problem-solving, collaboration, and critical thinking while preparing students for success beyond high school.
Following the tours, participants engaged in discussions about the role of College Partnership Lab Schools in strengthening collaboration between K-12 schools and higher education institutions. Conversations focused on the successes and challenges of the first year, including the integration of workforce-aligned curricula, partnerships with industry, and innovative instructional models. Attendees explored ways to navigate the logistical, financial, and policy considerations associated with launching and sustaining lab schools, emphasizing the need for continued partnership and strategic planning.

The event provided a space for educators and university faculty to collaborate on defining what innovation means within Virginia’s College Partnership Lab School network. Participants examined ways to refine instructional approaches, expand access to career and technical education, and develop strategies for long-term sustainability. The gathering reinforced the shared commitment to ensuring that lab schools serve as hubs for educational transformation, equipping students with the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving workforce.
The ODU Center for Educational Innovation and Opportunity remains committed to supporting these efforts through continued collaboration with educators, universities, and industry partners.
