ODU Lab School Teams Expand & Learn at SXSW EDU

Austin, TX – Representatives from the Aerospace Academy of the Eastern Shore (AAES), SmithTech, and the ODU Center for Educational Innovation & Opportunity had the distinct honor of attending the SXSW EDU Conference in Austin, Texas, from March 3-6. The team joined thousands of educators, industry leaders, and innovators from across the country to engage in thought-provoking discussions, hands-on learning experiences, and networking opportunities designed to shape the future of education. This event provided a valuable space to explore new ideas, learn from leading experts, and connect with others committed to advancing K–12 education. The knowledge gained will directly contribute to strengthening the work of the ODU and Virginia College Partnership Lab School Network.

SXSW EDU provided a unique platform for exploring emerging trends in K–12 education, technology integration, and workforce development. The conference featured keynote speakers, panel discussions, and interactive workshops focused on reimagining how schools can prepare students for careers in STEM, aerospace, cybersecurity, and computer science. Attendees engaged in collaborative problem-solving sessions, learning strategies to enhance student engagement and workforce alignment. Many sessions emphasized the importance of hands-on, experiential learning, an approach central to the mission of the ODU College Partnership Lab Schools. These insights will play a critical role in shaping innovative, student-centered learning opportunities in Virginia.

Throughout the week, the ODU team immersed themselves in thought partnership and innovative educational strategies, gathering new insights to enhance lab school programming. By engaging with leading experts in education and workforce preparation, the team gained valuable knowledge on best practices, technology-driven instruction, and industry-aligned learning pathways. These experiences will directly inform the continued development of high-quality, career-focused education in Virginia’s public schools. The exposure to new teaching models and instructional strategies will help refine the work already underway in ODU’s lab schools. The team remains committed to ensuring students have access to cutting-edge learning experiences that prepare them for success in high-demand careers.

“The opportunity to engage with thought leaders at SXSW EDU has been truly invaluable,” said Dr. Gary Skeen, associate director of the ODU Center for Educational Innovation & Opportunity. “The insights we gained will help us refine and enhance our approach to innovation within the ODU College Partnership Lab Schools. We are excited to bring back new ideas, build stronger partnerships, and continue creating dynamic learning environments that prepare students for high-demand careers. This experience reinforced our belief that the future of education relies on collaboration, creativity, and a willingness to reimagine what is possible. We look forward to integrating these lessons into the work we are doing across the Commonwealth.”

As the ODU College Partnership Lab Schools continue to grow, the insights gained at SXSW EDU will play a vital role in shaping hands-on, future-ready learning experiences. The team looks forward to applying what they have learned to refine curriculum design, instructional practices, and workforce partnerships.
