The Center for Educational Innovation and Opportunity (CEIO) proudly celebrated the successful launch of its Makerspace Microcredential program, an intensive 6-week professional learning experience designed for bold, forward-focused educators.

The inaugural cohort brought together 10 educators from Virginia and Arizona who engaged deeply in a design thinking framework to develop customized makerspace implementation plans for their classrooms and libraries. Each plan emphasized three key pillars:

  • Accessibility – ensuring all students have equitable access to hands-on, creative learning

  • Community Partnerships – leveraging local resources and relationships to strengthen learning

  • Student Engagement – inspiring curiosity and critical thinking through real-world applications

“This cohort proved that when educators are given the space, structure, and support to think boldly, they rise to the challenge,” said Kaitlyn McCoy, Program Manager of the Innovation Lab at CEIO and lead facilitator of the course. “Every single participant brought creative, student-centered ideas to life—and laid the groundwork for makerspaces that will transform learning in their schools.”

Upon completion of the course, each educator earned 10.5 Continuing Education Units (CEUs), demonstrating both their professional commitment and readiness to lead innovation in their schools and districts. This milestone not only marks the successful launch of the program but sets a strong foundation for future cohorts.

Each Makerspace Microcredential cohort is limited to a maximum of 20 participants, ensuring a personalized and high-impact learning experience.
