WTKR recently went behind the scenes with the Center for Educational Innovation and Opportunity to feature the launch of four new public lab schools across Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore.
These aren’t pilot programs—they’re full-scale public investments in students, educators, and the future of the Commonwealth. Focused on STEM, computer science, aerospace, and maritime engineering, these lab schools are not alternatives to public education—they are public education, reimagined. Forward-focused, career-connected, and built for what’s next.
The story highlights how public universities and school divisions are coming together to create learning environments that align with the future of work. With support from partners like Suffolk Public Schools and Amtek Company, Inc., these new spaces are filled with cutting-edge equipment and hands-on experiences that prepare students—and teachers—for real-world success.
