The Center for Educational Innovation and Opportunity at Old Dominion University is now enrolling participants for its upcoming Makerspace Micro-Credential for Educators, a 12-hour professional learning opportunity designed to equip teachers with the tools and strategies needed to create inclusive, project-based makerspaces.
The program begins June 24 and runs through July 29 with weekly virtual sessions held on Mondays from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. It concludes with a required in-person project-based session at the ODU Peninsula Center’s Innovation Lab. Participants may choose from one of two in-person dates: July 30 or August 4, both from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Lunch and consumable materials will be provided during the final session.
Designed for educators across grade levels and content areas, this micro-credential introduces the foundations of makerspace design, along with practical strategies for supporting diverse learners, integrating digital tools, and building real-world community partnerships. Participants will leave with a completed project, a toolkit for implementation, and a micro-credential certifying their skills.
Session topics include:
- Understanding the purpose and impact of makerspaces
- Designing with technology and accessibility in mind
- Cultivating a maker mindset and applying design thinking
- Connecting classroom projects to community needs
- Ensuring safety and sustainability within the makerspace
The program cost is $75 per educator and includes all instructional sessions, materials, and micro-credential documentation. It is ideal for teachers seeking to launch or expand a makerspace program within their school or division.
Registration is now open at bit.ly/micromakers. Participants must register for all seven sessions individually and will receive a MIDAS activation link via email following enrollment to access course materials.
