This week, first graders in Mrs. Bales’ class at the STEM Academy at Booker T. Washington Elementary transformed their classroom into a hands-on learning laboratory—complete with chef hats, measuring tools, and plenty of curiosity.

As part of an integrated STEM lesson, students explored foundational math concepts by learning about fractions, including wholes, halves, and fourths. Rather than working only with worksheets or diagrams, students applied these concepts by creating their own simple recipes and preparing snacks together. Measuring ingredients, dividing portions, and discussing how items could be shared equally helped students connect abstract mathematical ideas to tangible, real-world experiences.

The lesson also emphasized collaboration and communication. Students worked alongside their classmates, practiced taking turns, and discussed their thinking as they made decisions together—key skills that support both academic growth and social development in early elementary grades.

In addition to math and teamwork, the experience incorporated important life skills. Students learned and practiced food safety procedures, with a focus on proper hand-washing and clean kitchen habits. These routines reinforced responsibility and awareness while helping students understand how STEM learning connects to everyday life beyond the classroom.

The activity concluded with students enjoying the snacks they created together during their class holiday celebration. More than just a fun experience, the lesson showcased how hands-on, inquiry-based learning builds confidence, deepens understanding, and fosters a sense of community among young learners.
