Norfolk, VA – The ODU Center for Educational Innovation & Opportunity is celebrating a tremendous response to the launch of its four ODU College Partnership Lab Schools, set to open in fall 2025. With applications approaching 600, the demand for these tuition-free, STEM-focused public schools underscores the growing interest in innovative, workforce-aligned education across the region. These schools offer specialized academic programs that align with high-demand career fields and provide students with hands-on, real-world learning experiences. The overwhelming interest highlights the importance of expanding access to high-quality educational opportunities that prepare students for success in STEM careers. By creating rigorous and industry-aligned curricula, these schools aim to bridge the gap between education and workforce readiness, ensuring that students are well-equipped for future opportunities.
In partnership with Accomack, Chesapeake, Newport News, Northampton, and Suffolk Public Schools, the four lab schools will offer programs in computer science, maritime engineering, aerospace, and environmental science. These schools are designed to provide students with a rigorous curriculum that integrates problem-solving, technology, and career-based learning. By embedding industry-relevant skills into the educational experience, the programs help students develop competencies that will prepare them for future workforce opportunities. The ODU College Partnership Lab Schools are part of a broader statewide initiative to expand access to specialized STEM education. The Center also partners with five additional schools in Northern, Southside, and Southwestern Virginia, bringing the ODU College Partnership Lab School Network to a total of nine schools. In addition to supporting its network of schools, the Center serves as the statewide connector for all 15 Virginia Lab Schools, facilitating professional learning, site visits, and collaboration among educators. These efforts ensure that innovative instructional models and best practices reach classrooms across the Commonwealth, benefiting students and educators statewide. By leveraging a networked approach to education reform, the Center fosters knowledge-sharing and best practices that have the potential to transform K-12 instruction across the state.
