Students learning at the intersection of teamwork, nuclear, and maritime

MEESA Innovators recently welcomed Joe Ford, founder of 1021Plus, for an in-depth conversation exploring the nuclear energy workforce and its critical connections to the maritime industry. The visit offered students a firsthand look at how emerging energy systems rely on strong maritime infrastructure, technical expertise, and cross-sector collaboration.

During his time with students, Ford engaged Innovators in candid discussions about career pathways across the nuclear and energy sectors, Virginia’s evolving workforce needs, and the increasingly interconnected nature of energy, transportation, and maritime operations. He emphasized that modern nuclear and energy systems are not built in silos, but through coordinated efforts among engineers, technicians, cybersecurity professionals, operators, and maritime teams.

What stood out most to Ford was MEESA’s collaborative learning culture. He noted that K–12 students who already understand how to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams are rare and exceptionally valuable within the nuclear and energy workforce. Throughout the visit, that observation was reinforced as students collaborated in real time, challenged assumptions, shared responsibilities, and iterated on ideas together.

As part of the experience, Ford mentored Innovators as they developed nuclear-energy-informed solutions within their Port Futures projects. By grounding student work in real-world industry challenges, he provided context that elevated student thinking and sharpened their understanding of how energy systems operate within complex maritime environments. Student engagement remained high throughout the session, with many eager to continue discussions even as transportation arrived.

“The power of this work is in how students learn to think and work together across disciplines,” said Tirzah Jaynes, Program Administrator. “When students can connect nuclear energy concepts to maritime systems and collaborate as a team, they begin to see how their learning applies beyond the classroom and into real careers.”

The visit also fostered meaningful connections with ODU cybersecurity interns, highlighting how MEESA’s learning environment naturally bridges secondary education, higher education, and industry. These interactions reinforced the importance of cybersecurity within energy and maritime systems and illustrated how multiple career pathways intersect within the region’s workforce ecosystem.

Conversations extended beyond the classroom to future-facing initiatives in collaboration with the Hampton Roads Workforce Council, underscoring MEESA’s role as a launchpad for Virginia’s next-generation maritime and energy workforce. Through experiences like this, MEESA continues to prepare students not only with technical knowledge, but with the collaborative skills essential for success in complex, real-world industries.
