As part of our semester-long Signature Project, Operation StormWatch, STEM Academy students at Booker T. Washington Elementary continue to deepen their understanding of emergency preparedness, response, and community resilience through authentic, real-world learning experiences. This week’s Forecast Friday highlights two powerful partnership visits that brought emergency management concepts to life for our students.
Civil Air Patrol Supports Emergency Response Learning (12/15)
On Monday, December 15, the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Tidewater Composite Squadron visited STEM Academy to support a critical learning experience connected to Operation StormWatch. Students were introduced to Points of Distribution (PODs) and explored how PODs are used to safely and efficiently distribute essential supplies to communities following a disaster.
Students then participated in a mock POD drive-through simulation, where they took on the role of community members receiving aid. Through this hands-on experience, students learned which items are typically distributed during disaster response, such as water, food, and emergency supplies, and discussed why these items are prioritized to support community safety and recovery.
CAP cadets also took learning to new heights by introducing our 4th and 5th grade STEM Academy students to drone flight. Every student had the opportunity to fly drones indoors while learning basic flight principles, including navigation, control, and safety. Cadets shared how CAP uses drones during disaster response to support search efforts, damage assessment, and emergency coordination, helping students see how aviation and technology play a critical role in modern emergency management.
We are grateful to the Civil Air Patrol Tidewater Composite Squadron for bringing emergency response, aviation, and STEM learning together in such an engaging and memorable way.
Learning from Local Emergency Management and Fire & Rescue (12/16)
On Tuesday, December 16, Mr. Richard Stephens, Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator for the City of Suffolk, along with members of Suffolk Fire and Rescue, visited STEM Academy to further support Operation StormWatch learning.
Mr. Stephens introduced students to the history and purpose of Emergency Management, emphasizing why planning and preparedness are essential to keeping communities safe before, during, and after disasters. Students learned about the five pillars of emergency management: preparedness, prevention, mitigation, response, and recovery, and discussed what each looks like in real-world scenarios.
Students also explored the Virginia Hurricane Evacuation Guide, learning about evacuation routes, flood-prone areas, and what families should include in an emergency supply bag. These conversations encouraged students to think critically about preparedness at home and how families can plan together before emergencies occur.
Following this presentation, Fire & Rescue Squad members Jeremy, Trevor, and Cooper shared their roles on emergency response teams, including driving emergency vehicles, managing rescue logistics, and fighting fires. Students then toured a fire truck outdoors, where they learned how each component of the vehicle works and examined the specialized equipment firefighters use to rescue individuals and respond to emergencies.
Students asked thoughtful questions about firefighter training, career pathways, and home safety plans, reinforcing the importance of evacuation planning and communication within families.
To conclude the visit, Mr. Stephens and Ms. Katie, Community Risk Reduction Coordinator, generously provided students with fire safety gift bags. Each student received a Virginia Hurricane Evacuation Guide to take home, along with Suffolk Fire and Rescue pencils and a commemorative cup to remember the experience.
Building Community-Connected STEM Learning
These experiences exemplify the goals of Operation StormWatch by connecting classroom learning with real-world applications and community partnerships. Through hands-on simulations, expert visits, and authentic tools, STEM Academy students are building the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to understand emergency management and community resilience.
